This text is different from the articles I usually publish. It is not centered on a technique, a treatment, or a clinical indication. It is more personal, more reflective. It is about what 24 years of practice have taught me about the dental profession,<\/a> beyond the technical dimension alone. <\/p>\n\n

I am writing it because the profession has given me so much, and because it seems right to share what this practice has built within me, in the hope that it resonates with some of my patients.<\/p>\n\n

A vocation without family tradition<\/h3>\n\n

No one in my family was in dentistry or medicine at all. My vocation did not come from a family tradition; it came from a personal conviction: I wanted a profession that was both intellectual and manual. <\/p>\n\n

This dual dimension has always attracted me. A purely intellectual profession seemed incomplete to me. A purely manual profession lacked a conceptual dimension. Dentistry brought the two together, with the particularity of working on the human body, in an area where every gesture involves significant functional and aesthetic stakes. <\/p>\n\n

After 24 years, this initial conviction remains true. The profession still brings these two dimensions together. What has changed is the depth with which I perceive each of them. <\/p>\n\n

What university cannot teach<\/h3>\n\n

University trains you in the fundamentals. Anatomy, physiology, pathology, basic clinical techniques. These fundamentals are essential; they are the foundation upon which everything is built. <\/p>\n\n

But university cannot teach everything that comes next. The post-graduate learning curve is long, often longer than the training itself. We learn by practicing, by observing our results, by analyzing our cases, by comparing our practice with that of colleagues, by reading, and by continuously training. <\/p>\n\n

University also does not prepare you for the reality of the dental office as a business. Management, organization, human resources, patient relations, strategic choices, equipment. It is an entire ecosystem that is discovered after graduation. <\/p>\n\n

This reality, when discovered at age 26, can be destabilizing. It is, in fact, an invitation to consider the profession as a continuous learning journey that never ends. Twenty-four years after graduation, I continue to learn every week about my clinical practice and all dimensions of the profession. <\/p>\n\n

A technical profession that generates stress<\/h3>\n\n

The technical dimension of the dentist’s job is unique. It requires working in a limited space, with constrained visibility, on living tissues, with materials that obey their own physical and chemical rules. <\/p>\n\n

What is bonded can become unbonded. What seems perfect on the day of placement can evolve differently over time. The oral environment varies from one patient to another, sometimes from one visit to the next for the same patient. Every technical gesture is performed with this awareness. <\/p>\n\n

This context generates stress. A legitimate stress that accompanies all serious practitioners, regardless of their level of experience. Learning to deal with this stress is part of clinical maturation. It is not the stress we seek to eliminate; it is the way we manage it that evolves. <\/p>\n\n

Today, this stress no longer prevents me from functioning. It serves as an indicator. It signals to me when a gesture requires particular attention, when a clinical context imposes extra vigilance, when a decision deserves time for reflection before execution. <\/p>\n\n

Empathy and its clinical limit<\/h3>\n\n

The profession is also deeply human. Technique only makes sense if it is put at the service of a person, in their context, with their expectations, their fears, and their requests. <\/p>\n\n

Empathy, in my profession, is the ability to see the world through the patient’s eyes. Understanding what they feel, what they expect, what concerns them. This ability is essential for making a relevant diagnosis and proposing an appropriate treatment. <\/p>\n\n

But empathy has a clear limit: the patient’s oral health. A patient who comes in asking “just to fill a tooth” when the examination reveals a dental cyst cannot be followed in their initial request. My role then is to explain the clinical reality, to propose appropriate care, and sometimes to refuse a request that would not respect the patient’s health. <\/p>\n\n

This tension between listening and clinical responsibility is permanent. It requires being present for the person while maintaining the practitioner’s perspective. It is perhaps the most difficult quality to develop, and the one that distinguishes a truly human profession from a purely technical or purely commercial one. <\/p>\n\n

The relationship with failure and uncertainty<\/h3>\n\n

Here is an important clinical truth: to have 100% guaranteed success, the tooth would have to be intact and never treated. Everything we do in dentistry is trying to bring potential back to a tooth that has lost it. It will always be imperfect. <\/p>\n\n

This reality may seem harsh. It is, in fact, liberating, provided it is accepted. It places the profession in a fair reality: we do not repair to an identical state; we restore with the best current means, knowing that nothing we do is eternal or perfect. <\/p>\n\n

Living with this uncertainty is part of the learning curve. A young practitioner may be destabilized by results that do not meet their expectations. A more experienced practitioner has integrated this reality and directs their energy toward problem-solving rather than the quest for an impossible perfection. <\/p>\n\n

I am of this nature. I practice every day to orient my brain toward resolving clinical situations with the best solutions available, rather than toward regretting ideal situations that do not exist. <\/p>\n\n

This posture changes the relationship with the patient. We do not promise perfect results. We explain what is reasonably achievable, we document the necessary compromises, and we prepare for changes over time. This clinical honesty is what builds lasting trust. <\/p>\n\n

What the profession has given me<\/h3>\n\n

After 24 years, I continue to practice with the same intensity as at the beginning. It is not because the job is easy. It is because it continues to nourish me. <\/p>\n\n

It nourishes me through variety. Every patient is different, every clinical situation is unique, and every day presents its own particular challenges. <\/p>\n\n

It nourishes me through high standards. Technical progression is never finished. Materials evolve, techniques become more refined, and digital dentistry opens new possibilities every year. Staying up to date requires continuous commitment. <\/p>\n\n

It nourishes me through human relationships. The gratitude of a relieved patient, the confidence of a complex project that goes well, the loyalty of patients followed for years\u2014these are the rewards that give meaning to daily work. <\/p>\n\n

And it nourishes me through the conviction that what I do really matters to those who trust me. A successful dental treatment does not just change a tooth; it often changes something in the patient’s life, in their relationship with themselves, in their ability to smile, to eat, to live. <\/p>\n\n

It is probably this last point that explains why this profession still gives me so much, 24 years after choosing to dedicate my professional life to it.<\/p>\n\n

A closing note<\/h3>\n\n

This text is not a manifesto. It is not a comparison. It is a personal sharing, at a time when I am taking the time to look at what the profession has built within me. <\/p>\n\n

Every practitioner experiences their profession differently. What I describe here is my own experience, my own journey, my own way of practicing. Other practitioners have their own paths, which are just as legitimate. <\/p>\n\n

What I hope by publishing this text is simply to share, with the patients who trust me and with those who might one day come to the office, a more complete picture of who the practitioner receiving them is. Beyond the technique, beyond the clinical articles, there is a human being who practices this profession with conviction, humility, and commitment. <\/p>\n\n

It is this dimension that this text intended to establish.<\/p>\n\n
