No-prep dental veneers are among the most frequent requests in cosmetic dentistry. The idea is appealing — improving your smile without altering your teeth, pain-free, with a potentially reversible solution.
It’s possible. In certain specific cases.
But the question isn’t “Do I want no-prep veneers?” — it’s “Does my clinical situation allow for them?”
What a No-Prep Veneer Really Is
A dental veneer is a thin ceramic shell bonded to the visible surface of the tooth. In the classic protocol, the tooth is slightly prepared — a thin layer of enamel is removed to allow for optimal bonding and a natural result.
In the no-prep protocol — no tooth reduction. The veneer is bonded directly onto intact enamel.
The clinical advantage is real — no damage to the dental pulp, a more conservative approach, a potentially reversible solution if needed.
However, this protocol is not applicable to all situations.
When No-Prep Veneers Are Indicated
In my practice at Dental Swiss Clinics, I offer no-prep veneers when three conditions are met.
Occlusion allows it If the occlusion is locked — meaning the lower teeth make direct contact with the surface of the tooth to be treated — placing a no-prep veneer creates additional thickness that will disrupt chewing. This is not a viable option in such cases.
The tooth is recessed When a tooth is slightly recessed compared to neighboring teeth, the veneer naturally fills this space and aligns the smile. The result is natural without creating excessive thickness.
No bruxism or loss of vertical dimension Bruxism — teeth grinding — generates significant occlusal forces that can fracture a no-prep veneer. Long-term stability is compromised.
When No-Prep Veneers Are Not Indicated
The following situations suggest a minimal preparation — even slight:
- Locked occlusion — direct contact on the future veneer
- Uncontrolled active bruxism
- Loss of vertical dimension
- Already bulky teeth — the veneer would create visible excess thickness
In these cases, minimal preparation remains the safest and most predictable long-term solution. It doesn’t mean “damaging the teeth” — it means creating the clinical conditions for a lasting result.
What Patients Often Don’t Know
The majority of patients requesting no-prep veneers are motivated by two fears — fear of damaging their teeth and the desire for a reversible solution.
These fears are legitimate. But the answer isn’t systematically “no-prep” — it’s “minimal preparation when clinically indicated.”
A preparation of a few tenths of a millimeter in enamel — performed with precision — does not weaken the tooth. It creates the conditions for optimal bonding and natural thickness.
The goal isn’t to reduce — it’s to do the strict minimum for a reliable and lasting result.
The Decision — Always Individualized
Each case is different. A complete clinical evaluation — examination of the occlusion, analysis of the teeth concerned, discussion of expectations — is essential before any decision.
It’s not a matter of preference or trend. It’s a medical indication.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are no-prep veneers reversible? Since the tooth is not reduced, removal is theoretically possible. In practice, removing a bonded veneer requires clinical intervention and may leave traces on the enamel. The term “reversible” should be understood with nuance.
Do no-prep veneers last as long? When the indication is correctly established — yes. Longevity primarily depends on adherence to clinical indications, hygiene, and regular follow-ups.
Is it painful? With no-prep, anesthesia is not necessary in the vast majority of cases. This is one of the advantages of this protocol for anxious patients.
Can no-prep veneers be done on all visible teeth? No — the indication is evaluated tooth by tooth. Some teeth in the same smile may require minimal preparation while others can be treated without.
What is the cost of veneers in Montreux? Ceramic veneers are offered starting from CHF 800 at Dental Swiss Clinics. A personalized quote is provided after clinical evaluation.
